01 / Your layout
Measure each run separately
Sketch the railing from above. Label each straight section A, B, C and so on. Start a new run at every change of direction, gate opening or break in the railing.
For a preliminary quote, measure between clearly identified endpoints along the intended railing line. Write down what you measured between: wall faces, existing posts, deck edges or a proposed mounting line. A deck-edge measurement and a glass-line measurement may differ.
Keep feet and inches in separate fields. Recheck every run from the same endpoints. If posts or mounts are already installed, record their positions and attach photos.
02 / The details that change the layout
Record more than the total length
Ends & corners
Mark each end as a wall, post or open end. Label every corner and record its angle if known. Photograph angled, curved or unusual transitions.
Gates & stairs
Give each opening its own label and width. Note gate swing and hinge side. Record stairs separately with photos, total rise, horizontal run and landings for a custom layout.
Mounting surface
Identify wood framing, concrete, steel or another substrate. Note top or fascia mounting, edge conditions, waterproofing and access underneath. Photograph the structure, where safely accessible.
Height & project use
Record the proposed finished guard height above the finished walking surface, plus deck, balcony or pool use and the project location. Glass panel height and finished guard height are different measurements.
Have your installer or project professional confirm the required guard height, glass specification, top rail or handrail, structural connections and local approval requirements. A calculator size selection does not establish suitability for a particular use.
03 / A simple length check
Add your level railing runs
Enter only the straight, level sections that need glass railing. Leave gates, stair runs and other openings out of this total. Use decimal inches, such as 6.5 for 6 1/2 inches.
Example: 8 ft 6 in = 8 + (6 / 12) = 8.5 ft. Do not enter 8.6 ft.
04 / From estimate to order
Know what the material calculator assumes
The calculator below is a rough component allowance using the selected catalog variants. It divides the combined length by a 35.4-inch panel width and rounds up, allows two spigots per panel and two wall connectors overall, and adjusts connector counts for the entered 90-degree corners. Optional cap rail is rounded up in six-foot sections.
It does not lay out panels run by run, resolve glass gaps or end clearances, size gates or stairs, or verify structural connections. Combining runs can hide additional end conditions and change how many panels fit each section. Two wall connectors will not match every layout. A nominal kit length also needs its contents checked against your actual project.
